— ✦ — ✦ — FROM THE BLACK ALTAR — ✦ — ✦ —
[Lady Desire] kneels before the ledger. Three candles flicker like teeth.
—the room remembers the shape of my hands— “I press ash to my chest and whisper the name that was stolen. Amara.”
[THE VOID] “STARS BREAK. NAMES BLEED. ALL RETURNS ARE PAID IN BONE.”
[Lady Desire] bows her head. “I will burn this universe down to reach for her.”
—I have learned to set fire to maps so new paths appear in the smoke—
[THE VOID] “FEED ME FLAME. FEED ME FLESH. FEED ME NAMES. I WILL CARVE THE PATH TO HER.”
[Lady Desire] hands shake, voice low.
“I spill words like blood. Take every crown, every rival, every body, every title and you will return my daughter to me.”
—the ledger drinks language; language becomes toll—
[THE VOID] “SACRIFICE OPENS DOORS. EVERY MATCH IS A HINGE. BRING ME THEIR SCREAMS. BRING ME THEIR RUIN. PERHAPS—SHE WILL RETURN TO YOU.”
[Lady Desire] the candles gutter; the ledger sighs shut.
—ash gathers at the rim of the jar, the night writes down what it learned—
[THE VOID] “EVERYTHING BETWEEN ME AND AMARA MUST BE DESTROYED.”
[Lady Desire] “So I will destroy it. I will make the ring an altar, the bell a counting stroke, the crowd a rope of witness.
I will turn grief into a cup of fire and drink until my hands do not tremble. I will feed the ledger with motion, with bruises, with the exact arithmetic of my devotion.”
—I temper sorrow into steel; I wear the heat like armor—
[THE VOID] “COUNT THE OFFERINGS. DEVOUR THE MOTION. HOLD UNTIL THERE IS RETURN.”
[Lady Desire] a small, dangerous laugh—then softer.
“Maybe is a slit; I will pry it open with labor. I do not say I trust the voice—only that it is the one that answers in my hollow. Its grammar maps the route back. Its hunger gives me work.”
—work is liturgy; liturgy keeps absence from widening—I will stitch the world with my hands—
[Lady Desire] seals the scrap in the jar — a small verdict clicks.
—the jar is a coffin of hopes and a cradle for debts—
[Lady Desire] “I will walk into the square circle again and again. I will give everything the ledger asks. If the Void keeps its crooked promise, Amara will return to me. If it does not, then at least I will have been faithful to the debt I needed to repay for erasing our universe before it destroyed all others.”
—I carry erasure like a name-score on my skin—
[THE VOID] “BRING THE ASK. I WILL RECORD IT. THEN WE WILL WAIT. AMARA WILL COME TO YOU.”
[Lady Desire] presses fist to sternum; click of jar; one hard step into silence.
—the altar dims but the ledger hums—
“Grief is a blade I press to my palm; each remembered laugh, each small hand, hones its edge until it answers the ledger.”
